Artie Bernstein
Arthur "Artie" Bernstein (* 4. Februar 1909 in Brooklyn, New York City; † 4.

Three Chords for Beauty's Sake: The Life of Artie Shaw
Tom Nolan von W W Norton & Co, 2010
During America s Swing Era, no musician was more successful or controversial than Artie Shaw: the charismatic and opinionated clarinetist-bandleader whose dozens of hits became anthems for the greatest generation. Public Service Post in Honor of Charlie Christian | The Pop of Yestercentury
Even if Charlie Christian had lived to celebrate his 96th birthday yesterday, or his 26th birthday decades ago, his music would remain just as momentous and swinging. Despite a short career, Christian never suffered from "young man with an instrument" syndrome: a fast life and early death never overshadowed his pioneering work as a jazz…

Gin For Christmas – Lionel Hampton | Shiraz Socialist
'Gin For Christmas' is actually 'Bugle Call Rag', with no very obvious Christmas connotations, but (one suspects) plenty of evidence of gin. Perhaps, on 30 October 1939, Hamp and the boys had already started celebrating. The riff behind the solos and throughout the performance, could be vocalised as "(Some) Gin For Christmas", which may account for the…

Jazz improvisation: Waitin’ for Benny « Why Evolution Is True
I can't believe I found this on YouTube, as this specimen of jazz improvisation is pretty obscure. A few days ago I put up the song "Rose Room" by Benny Goodman and his sextet, featuring Charlie Christian on the electric guitar. Idly entering "Waiting for Benny" in the search engine, I found that that song…
