Ovambo people

The Aawambo or Ambo people (endonyms Aawambo [Ndonga], Ovawambo [Kwanyama]) consist of a number of kindred Bantu ethnic groups which inhabit Ovamboland in northern Namibia as well as the southernmost Angolan province Cunene. In Namibia, these are the AaNdonga, Ovakwanyama, Aakwambiga, Aangandjera, Aambalantu, Aambadja, Aakolonkadhi and Aakwaluudhi. In Angola, they are the Ovakwanyama, Aakafima, Evale and Aandonga. They are the largest ethnic group in Namibia.
The Ambo people migrated south from the upper regions of Zambezi and currently make up the greatest population in Namibia. The reason that they settled in the area where they now live was for the rich soil that is scattered around the Ovamboland. The Ambo population is overall roughly 1,500,000.

Ovambo

EARTH PEOPLES Blog » Blog Archive » NAMIBIA: INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DEMAND THEIR RIGHTS
As the result of a two months-long visit to the former Kaokoland by independent human rights expert, Rebecca Sommer, who conducted human rights awareness raising gatherings with two of the several Namibian indigenous minority groups, the Himba people issued two separate declarations listing a whole of litany of violations of their civil, cultural, economic, environmental, social and political rights perpetrated by the Government of Namibia (GoN). The Zemba people also issued their declaration listing similar violations by GoN. In the three declarations, signed between January 20 2012 and February 12 2012 the Himba (who include the Twa and Tjimba subgroups) pointed out that they are a distinct people, with their own tradition and culture and that they have exclusively inhabited the former Kaokoland for centuries prior to Namibian independence in 1990. In their two declarations the Himba people also pointed out that, they are totally opposed to the construction of a huge hydroelectric dam on the Kunene River.
